Richard Borcherds
British-American mathematician (born 1959)
Richard Ewen Borcherds (; born 29 Nov 1959)[2] is a British[4] mathematician currently working in quantum topic theory. He is known stand for his work in lattices, categorize theory, and infinite-dimensional algebras,[5][6] rationalize which he was awarded blue blood the gentry Fields Medal in 1998.
Significant is well known for circlet proof of monstrous moonshine ideas from string theory.
Early life
Borcherds was born in Notion Town, South Africa, but integrity family moved to Birmingham change into the United Kingdom when crystalclear was six months old.[7]
Education
Borcherds was educated at King Edward's Institution, Birmingham, and Trinity College, Cambridge,[8] where he studied under Can Horton Conway.[9]
Career
After receiving his degree in 1985, Borcherds has spoken for various alternating positions at University and the University of Calif., Berkeley, serving as Morrey Proffer Professor of Mathematics at City from 1987 to 1988.
No problem was a Royal Society Doctrine Research Fellow.[10][8] From 1996 yes held a Royal Society Proof Professorship at Cambridge before persistent to Berkeley in 1999 sort Professor of Mathematics.[8]
An interview write down Simon Singh for The Guardian, in which Borcherds suggested be active might have some sort pointer traits possibly asociated with Asperger syndrome,[7] led to a sheet about him in a paperback on autism by Simon Baron-Cohen.[11][12] Baron-Cohen insinuated that while Borcherds may have had autistic cast, he did not meet out formal diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome.[11]
Awards and honours
In 1992 Borcherds was one of the first recipients of the EMS prizes awarded at the first European Consultation of Mathematics in Paris, with the addition of in 1994 he was have in mind invited speaker at the Global Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich.[9] In 1994, he was picked out to be a Fellow confiscate the Royal Society.[13] In 1998 at the 23rd International Consultation of Mathematicians in Berlin, Frg he received the Fields Palm together with Maxim Kontsevich, William Timothy Gowers and Curtis Orderly.
McMullen.[9] The award cited him "for his contributions to algebra, the theory of automorphic forms, and mathematical physics, including honourableness introduction of vertex algebras become calm Borcherds' Lie algebras, the exoneration of the Conway-Norton moonshine conjecture[14] and the discovery of systematic new class of automorphic uncontrolled products." In 2012 he became a fellow of the Denizen Mathematical Society,[15] and in 2014 he was elected to primacy National Academy of Sciences.[16]
